Moving Advice

 

One month before

  1. Finalise your move date so that you can start making firm bookings for removal firms, inform utilities etc.
  2. Appoint a removal company.
  3. Start moving possessions into storage (if applicable).
  4. Who to notify

    Relatives and friends
  5. Banks and Credit Card companies
    Doctors/dentist
    Insurance providers (home, contents & life) / solicitor / stockbroker.
    Magazine subscriptions.
    Schools.
    Phone and internet
  6. Gas. Arrange a final reading at your old house and reconnection at your new one. Electricity. A final reading at your old house and reconnection at your new one. Water.
    TV licence
    Arrange for the Post office to have your post redirected.
    Vet

One week before

  1. Cancel local deliveries and services, for example newspapers, gardener, cleaner, milk delivery, fuel or oil.
  2. Finish packing.
  3. Make sure all boxes are properly and clearly labelled (I.e. the room they're going in to in your new home).
  4. Prepare detailed directions and an itinerary with emergency numbers for your moving company.
  5. Settle outstanding bills with local retailers. Pick up dry cleaning, and return library books and rented videotapes.

 

The day before

  1. Make sure you have the keys to your new home, or have arranged to collect them.
  2. Pack your "Survival on the day box" Tea, Coffee, toothpaste and brush, small tool kit, toilet roll, basic cultery and light bulbs.
  3. You may need to reserve a parking space for the removal van if you dont have a driveway.

The day of the move

  1. Record all utility meter readings (gas, electricity, and water).
  2. If your taking your white goods with you ensure these are unplugged, drained, defrosted and ready to be moved.
  3. Take one final look around to see if you forgot anything.
  4. Before leaving check that all windows are secure and water, gas and electricity supplies are switched off. Keys, together with any documents relating to the property or equipment remaining at the house, should be left at a nominated point.
  5. If your taking your white goods with you ensure these are unplugged, drained, defrosted and ready to be moved.
